Week of September 11th-17th

Great job by all Ram Harriers at the 2017 Capital Invite, and special congratulations to all of our first-time racers! You will NEVER forget your first race! All of the results are now posted on Athletic.net. Here are our notes for the upcoming week. Please note the important change to our schedule:
  • Due to the cancellation of the Timberline 2-mile last week due to smoke, we are adding one more date for our Junior/Senior athletes: October 11th at Capital. Freshmen/Sophomores will compete two days later at the Wright Park Invite. Please see Athletic.net for all the details.
  • Photographer parents! Please feel free to drop photos you've taken in our shared Google Photos album. Click here for the link, or see it above. It's a public folder, so if you find a picture you like, help yourself!
  • This week's practice/meet schedule is now posted here. As always, please visit Athletic.net for more detailed meet info. Wednesday we're at Shelton, and Saturday at Fort Steilacoom.
  • Families: if you couldn't make it to the Capital Invite, be sure to try and get to the Fort Steilacoom Invite this coming Saturday the 16th. At last count, 81 high school teams will be there! That's more than twice the size of the Capital Invite. It's one of the biggest meets around, and it's a blast for athletes and spectators alike. If you've never been to an XC meet before, go! You'll be hooked.
Please don't hesitate to email or message me via Remind with any questions. Go Rams!

NTHS XC Senior Spotlight: Carter Vu

"Just keep pushing"
Name: Carter Vu
Plans for next year: "I'll be attending Central Washington in the Fall and I plan to major in aviation."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "My teammates always pushed me above and beyond my limits which lead to great success."

Lessons learned: "Don't let your mind tell you to stop/give up--just keep pushing through the pain and keep on running."

Friday, June 2, 2017

NTHS XC Senior Spotlight: Logan Anderton

"Never give up"
Name: Logan Anderton
Plans for next year: "For the next 2 years I will be serving a mission for the Chiesa Di Gesu Cristo Dei Santi Delgi Ultimi Giorni (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) in Rome, Italy."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "My favorite thing about cross country was the opportunity to push myself, physically, mentally and emotionally. I learned how to work hard, and how to not give up when the going gets tough. I am not built like a runner. At all. In fact, I'm sure that the coaches thought that I went to the wrong practice for the first couple of days."

Lessons learned: "The lessons I learned in cross country have served me in school, at work, and on my mission, now. Learning Italian was one of the hardest things that I have done, and it continues to be so. But, I learned during my time in cross country to never give up. Even if you're not first. Even if you are last. You never give up. Thank you cross country for teaching me so much."

NTHS XC Senior Spotlight: Brandon Christensen

"Be prepared for hard work"
Name: Brandon Christensen
Plans for next year: "I will be attending University of Washington in Seattle in pre-engineering classes, and I plan to continue to run independently."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "The social aspect and the bond you make with your teammates."

Lessons learned: "Be prepared for hard work, but if you can put in the time and effort you will have results."

  • South Sound Conference Male Scholar Athlete - Fall 2016
  • Career stats (Athletic.net)
Plans for next year: "I will be attending Yale University, where I will either be studying computer science or applied mathematics."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "My favorite thing about Cross Country was going to the State meet as a team."

Lessons Learned: "It takes time, commitment, and practice to be successful. If you want to be great, you have to work for it."

Monday, May 22, 2017

NTHS XC Senior Spotlight: Mason Cooper

"Always pushing my limits"
Name: Mason Cooper
Plans for next year: "I am going to Central Washington University this Fall to study construction management or some sort of engineering, while also joining ROTC to become an officer in the Army."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "My favorite thing was always pushing my limits and trying to do a little better on each thing I did."

Lessons learned: "I learned that I can run a lot faster and farther than I ever would have imagined through hard work and dedication. I also learned that not every race will be your best race for whatever reason, but as long as you give it your all that's all you can ask for."

Friday, May 19, 2017

NTHS XC Senior Spotlight: Dylan Willis

"Consistency is key"
Name: Dylan Willis
  • Four-year Scholar Athlete (Cumulative GPA: 3.9)
  • Four-year varsity letter winner
  • 3-year Districts participant
  • Career stats (Athletic.net)
Plans for next year: "Next year I am going to attend Western Washington University and study Industrial Design. I will start classes in September and submit a portfolio to apply for pre-major in October. Looking forward to continuing running on my own (XC team?)."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "I have two things that I really enjoyed in Cross Country. First, doing long runs around Lacey/Saint Martins with my teammates was always fun. Especially when finding new routes. I also cannot forget the feeling that comes after a good race. Knowing you ran your absolute max for the entire race and finishing strong always feels GREAT. Especially if you are rewarded with a PR!"

Lessons learned: "When it comes to running/racing advice, consistency is key. It is important to find the right starting pace. (not sprinting, but fast enough to put you in good position). Once this has been found, hold it as long as you can! (This was always a good challenge/motivator for me)."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "The team dynamic that the cross country team develops throughout the season is my favorite part. I enjoy the bonding that goes on while growing as athletes."

Lessons learned: "It's never too early to start training for the season! Savor the time you have on the team because the season flies by."

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

NTHS XC Senior Spotlight: Charlie Jellison

Name: Charlie Jellison
"Pain is temporary"
Plans for next year: "I'll be attending the University of Washington in the Fall and I plan to study business. However, nothing is set in stone, so I'm still keeping an open mind about my major."

Favorite thing about Cross Country: "the sense of camaraderie that there was among teammates every year. Being in pain with people is a great way to bond."

Lessons learned: "the fact that pain is temporary. No matter how much it hurts at the two-mile mark, it will dissipate once you cross the finish line."
